The Dallas County GOP held a Republican Roundup event Tuesday afternoon in the Soumas Court in downtown Perry, with some 25 of the party faithful attending.

Perry’s representatives in the Iowa Legislature were absent, but Dallas County GOP Co-Chair Kelley Koch introduced two Latino special guests, Ian Rojas of Clive, an evangelical pastor and salesperson at Toyota of Des Moines, and Pedro Calderon of Perry, the local Republican organizer.

Rojas said Latino voters in Dallas County are attracted by the pro-life and pro-legal immigration positions of the GOP.

Calderon noted that the November ballot will include the Perry mayor’s office and two seats on the Perry City Council, and he said he would work to “replace Perry’s Democrat mayor,” apparently forgetting that city elected offices in Iowa are nonpartisan.

Brief remarks were also delivered by Dallas County Supervisor Mark Hanson, Dallas County Attorney Chuck Sinnard, Dallas County GOP Chair and Assistant County Attorney Ron Forsell and Waukee School Board Vice President Dan Gehlbach.

The county Republicans will host their annual picnic Thursday, June 17 at 5:30 p.m. in Evans Park in Adel. Pork tenderloins will be provided, and guests are asked to bring a side dish, dessert or drink.
