Radio communications from the Iowa State Patrol and the Dallas County Sheriff’s office report roadways in Dallas County were 100 percent ice covered as of 8 p.m. Sunday.

The National Weather Service has predicted ice accumulations up to one-third inch by Monday. Accumulations of mixed sleet and snow up to one-half inch are also expected, with light southeast winds from 5 to 10 mph.

The weather service said light snow or a wintry mix is possible when precipitation begins, “but it will then transition to mainly freezing rain across much of the state before switching back to light snow, drizzle or freezing drizzle before ending altogether.”

The NWS predicts “extremely hazardous travel due to ice covered and very slick roads. Sidewalks and parking lots will be slick. Tree damage and power outages are possible, with ice accumulations and winds likely leading to snapped power lines and falling tree branches.”

The ice accumulations will make travel “dangerous or impossible,” the NWS said. “Travel is strongly discouraged. Commerce will likely be severely impacted.”

If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of emergency, the service advises.
