Minburn’s big heart was full this week as it saw the demolition of two Heartland Coop silos badly damaged in the Aug. 10 derecho wind storm.

Workers were seen deconstructing the two westernmost bins, which collapsed inwardly under the force of winds exceeding 100 mph.

Individual disaster relief from the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency was  not extended to private property owners in Dallas County.

  1. Heartland purchases insurance that will indemnify them for the loss. Why are you suggesting FEMA is going to pay for those bins? Most homeowners purchase insurance to transfer that risk as well. Insurance to cover loss due to the storm was readily available, but you seem to be implying FEMA (i.e., taxpayers) should pay all the losses. Why do you assume people are unable to plan for potential loss to their assets (commercial or personal)? Taxpayers don’t get to use or enjoy that property. Why should they fund the risk to it?

  2. What is the point of this article? How about doing some real journalism and finding out what the impact to local farmers and HL CO-OP is as a result of the derecho, what Heartland’s plans are for managing through the impact of the storm, and plans for rebuilding?
