Defending state champs claim boys WCC golf crown

PANORA — The Panorama boys were the Class 1A 2016 state champions, and on Wednesday added a West Central Conference team title in their quest for a repeat at state.

Panorama had the top three low individual scorers, as well as the sixth-lowest, to record a winning 314 at Lake Panorama National. Des Moines Christian was second at 349, with Madrid third at 363 and Van Meter fourth at 377. West Central Valley (393), Woodward-Granger (395), Ogden (408) and Earlham (430) completed the field. AC/GC did not have the required four scores needed for a team total while the Woodward Academy does not compete in golf.

Kolby Shackelford (35-37–72), George Appleseth (38-37–75) and Will Babcock (41-38–79) led Panorama with the top three medalist scores while Mitch Wagler (48-40–88) was sixth overall. Trey Cobb (46-51–97) and Dylan Douglass (48-51–99) also played for the hosts.

Woodward-Granger was paced by Nick Brummond, who carded a 48-44–92, and by Brady Aunspach, who posted a 47-46–93. Austin Ober (53-45–98) and Max Helbling (59-53–112) also scored for the Hawks, who discarded the rounds of 55-66–121 from Hunter Pierce and of 71-62–133 from Nick Buch.

Tommy Weissenburger (42-41–83) led DMC while Jake Meeker and C.J. Lowe both shot 44-44–88 to guide Madrid. Blake Fryar was low man for Van Meter with a 46-46–92, with Garret Caltrider (46-45–91) leading WCV, Jade Thompson (51-49–100) Ogden and Ben Clement (49-42–91) Earlham while McKlain Jorgensen’s 54-61–115 was the lowest of three rounds recorded by AC/GC.
