Defensive woes doom Perry against Winterset

The linescore was not a pretty one Monday for the Perry softball team, as the Jayettes were guilty of 10 errors, leading to 11 unearned runs as Winterset posted a 13-1 victory in five innings of Raccoon River Conference play.

Perry starter Peyton Tunink had pitched herself into a jam in the top of the second with a walk and hit batsman following an error and fielder’s choice as Winterset loaded the bases with only one out. But Tunink bore down, inducing a line-out and a ground-out to keep the guests off the scoreboard and give some confidence to the Jayettes.

Unfortunately three hits and two walks — the impact of which was magnified by three errors — allowed eight Husky runs to score in the third inning.

Perry scored once in the bottom of the frame when Jasmine Shriver reached on an infield error. She moved to second on a Lydia Olejniczak single, then beat the throw home to score when Jayna Kenney singled up the middle.

Peyton Tunink’s single with one out in the fifth was the only other hit for the hosts as Madison Berns picked up the five-inning win while striking out two.

Winterset had put the game in peril of an early ending with a fifth inning Perry would likely like to forget as the hosts committed five errors in a six-batter span as the guests scored five times.

Peyton Tunink went 2-1/3 innings, allowing four hits and three walks while hitting one batter and striking out one. Kenney tossed 2-2/3 frames in relief, surrendering five hits. Tunink was touched for eight runs (two earned) with all five runs allowed by Kenney unearned.

Senior Corey Pickering had two singles and a triple to spark Winterset, with eighth-grader Ava Young adding two doubles and a single.

Perry will host Carroll Wednesday and Boone Thursday. Both dates will be varsity-first contests, with junior varsity play following. The varsity contests for both date will begin at 5:30 p.m.
