Deke Gliem, 70, of Dawson passed away Saturday, Sept. 14, 2019, at MercyOne Hospice in Johnston, Iowa.

Memorial services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 18 at 1 p.m. at the Carris Family Funeral Home and Cremation Care in Perry. Visitation will be Tuesday, Sept. 17 from 2-7 p.m., with family present from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials will be given to Deke’s family and may be left at the funeral home. Deke E Gliem was born Feb. 9, 1949, in Perry, Iowa, to Roy Ellis and Estella Mae (Cox) Gliem.

He attended Perry High School with the class of 1967.

Deke was united in marriage to Marilyn Phoebe Lehnhoff at Marshall, Minn., Nov. 24, 1978.

He worked at Oscar Mayer, the Dallas County Sheriff’s office and Stine Seed as greenhouse manager.

Deke was a member of the Iowa Arboretum, Brenton Arboretum, Gardeners of America, Russ O’Hara Hosta Society, Iowa Nut Growers Association, Sierra Club and the National Wildlife Federation.

He enjoyed gardening, being a naturalist, hiking, canoeing, watching wildlife and reading.

Deke was a lifelong learner and educator.

In death he rejoins his parents, Roy and Estella; and many beloved pets.

Left to cherish Deke’s memory are his wife, Marilyn Gliem of Dawson; children, Misty Schwieso of Madrid, Iowa, Deke Gliem Jr. of Des Moines and Eric (Alissa) Gliem of Perry;  grandchildren, Zachary Schwieso, Shelby (Brandon) Johnson, Kendra Gliem, Dakota Gliem, Brandon Gliem, Jordan Gliem and Katlyn Gliem; great-granddaughter, Baylor Johnson; and a sister, Connie Dunn of Perry.
