The 100-year-old Frog Creek Bridge on Willis Avenue was demolished this week. A Contec culvert will replace the original bridge structure.

Demolition of the 100-year-old Frog Creek Bridge on Willis Avenue began this week, and construction will continue for about two months.

The Willis Avenue bridge between W. Fourth and W. Fifth streets is being rebuilt by Elder Corp. of Des Moines. The $753,000 project has been planned for about three years.

Structural defects in the original bridge made strict weight limits necessary for many years.

The Iowa Department of Transportation, which approved the Elder Corp. bid, is covering 50 percent of the cost of the bridge replacement, with the city of Perry matching the state funds.

A Contec culvert will replace the current bridge structure, with ornamentation designed to match other downtown infrastructure.
