Des Moines couple arrested with meth, marijuana in Perry

A Des Moines couple was arrested on drug charges in Perry early Sunday when a traffic stop led to the discovery of a “significant quantity” of marijuana and methamphetamine.

Anthony John Ramirez, 41, of 2101 Clark St., Des Moines, was charged with two counts of controlled substance violation, unlawful possession of a prescription drug, two counts of failure to affix drug stamp and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Breanna Taylor Ramirez, 29, of 308 E. McKinley Ave., Des Moines, was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.

The incident began about 12:45 a.m. Sunday on Iowa Highway 141 at Iowa Street in Perry, where a Dallas County Deputy Sheriff made a traffic stop and welfare check on a 2002 Dodge Intrepid.

The deputy made contact with the vehicle’s occupants and allegedly perceived “an odor of burnt marijuana coming from the vehicle,” according to court records.

A probably-cause search of the vehicle disclosed “a significant quantity of suspected methamphetamine and marijuana” along with “packaging materials and digital scales” and “prescription pills” and “multiple items of drug paraphernalia,” according to court records.

Breanna Ramirez was held in the Dallas County Jail in advance of an initial appearance in Dallas County District Court.

Anthony Ramirez is held in the Dallas County Jail on a $25,000 cash or surety bond. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Feb. 2 in Dallas County District Court.

Anthony Ramirez was convicted of a controlled substance violation in 1999 in Polk County District Court. He was convicted of possession of a controlled substance in 1999 in Polk County District Court. He was convicted of third-offense possession of a controlled substance in 2005 in Polk County District Court.

*A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
