Des Moines man arrested for meth possession at Jordan Creek

Rian Lee Walls, 40, of Des Moines was arrested Thursday on charges of controlled substance violation, third or subsequent offense possession of a controlled substance-methamphetamine, tax stamp violation and possession of drug paraphernalia.

A Des Moines man was arrested on drug charges Thursday outside a motel in the Jordan Creek Center.

Rian Lee Walls, 40, of 4295 N.E. 10th St., Des Moines, was charged with controlled substance violation, third or subsequent offense possession of a controlled substance-methamphetamine, tax stamp violation and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The incident began about 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the 7600 block of Office Plaza Drive N. in West Des Moines, where officers of the West Des Moines Police Department initiated a traffic stop on a 2002 Saturn Vue for equipment violations.

Walls, the driver, allegedly “admitted to smoking methamphetamine earlier in the day and was profusely sweating,” according to court records.

A canine unit was called to the scene and “positively alerted on the vehicle,” according to court records, and a probable-cause search was then conducted.

The search allegedly disclosed “multiple bags of a crystalline substance resembling methamphetamine, cash, paraphernalia items with drug residue and a weight scale with residue. The bags totaled over 7 grams,” according to court records.

Marijuana wax was also allegedly found inside the vehicle.

Walls in held in the Dallas County Jail on a $35,000 cash or surety bond. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing March 22 in Dallas County District Court.

Walls was convicted on two counts of possession of a controlled substance in 2000 in Dallas County District Court. He was convicted of possession of a controlled substance in 2002 in Polk County District Court. He was convicted of possession of a controlled substance and second-offense possession of a controlled substance in 2013 in Polk County District Court. He was convicted of possession of a controlled substance in 2017 in Polk County District Court.

*A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
