Des Moines man tries to elude arrest by hiding in women’s toilet

A Des Moines man tried to avoid arrest by officers of the Waukee Police Department Thursday afternoon by locking himself in a women’s restroom.

Ricky Lee Cochran, 26, of 1456 Dean Ave., Des Moines, was charged with third-degree theft and interference with official acts.

The incident began about 12:30 p.m. Thursday in the 1300 block of S.E. Kettlestone Boulevard in Waukee, where officers of the Waukee Police Department responded to a report of a theft in progress at a retail store.

According to court records, Cochran allegedly “fled on foot” from the store, “leaving behind
items that were attempted to be stolen” and were worth $1,155.

Cochran allegedly ran from the retail store and to a convenience store in the 3100 block of Grand Prairie Parkway, where he sought refuge in “the women’s restroom and locked himself into a stall,” according to court records.

Cochran allegedly “resisted arrest and did not follow lawful commands,” according to court records.

Cochran is held in the Dallas County Jail on a $2,000 cash or surety bond. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Sept. 7 in Dallas County District Court.

Cochran was convicted of fifth-degree theft in 2018 in Polk County District Court. He was convicted of second-degree theft in 2019 in Polk County District Court. He was convicted of third-degree theft in 2019 in Polk County District Court. He was convicted of fourth-degree theft in 2019 in Polk County District Court. He was convicted of interference with official acts in 2019 in Polk County District Court.
