A Woodward-Granger school bus filled with elementary school children left the roadway of Iowa Highway 210 Monday afternoon after the bus driver suffered a medical emergency, but no injuries were suffered by any students thanks to the driver’s maintaining control and the quick responses of passersby.

The incident occurred about 3:30 p.m. near the southernmost end of Iowa Highway 210 at the Iowa Highway 141 interchange, where Woodward Granger Community School District Bus Driver Kenny Cavanaugh experienced a medical emergency on his way from Granger.

The bus came to rest about 30 yards east of Iowa Highway 210, and passing motorists promptly stopped, entered and shut off the bus, evacuated the children and attended Cavanaugh until the arrival of paramedics.

Cavanaugh was found unresponsive and flown by air ambulance to Mercy One Medical Center in Des Moines, according to a statement issued by the Woodward-Granger Community School District about 5:30 p.m. and confirmed by the Dallas County Sheriff’s office

Witnesses said a second school bus was dispatched from the Woodward-Granger High School to pick up the children from Cavanaugh’s bus. They were being transported from the Woodward-Granger Elementary School in Granger at the time of the emergency.

The district statement said that counseling resources and administrators “in all Woodward-Granger buildings will be available tomorrow to support any students and staff in need of assistance.”
