A prompt response by the Perry Volunteer Fire Department to a ditch fire on Eighth Street north of the Violet Hill Cemetery Sunday night saved a nearby house from possible damage or destruction.

There were no injuries reported in the blaze, which extended for about one-eighth of a mile.

The fire was reported by an officer of the Perry Police Department about 10:15 p.m., when it was burning in the ditch near the house at 12646 Jewell Ave., just outside the Perry city limits.

The 120-year-old, two-story farm house is owned by Janae E. Bess, according to Dallas County records.

Two units of the Perry Volunteer Fire Department responded and quickly doused the grass fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation at this hour.
