DMACC Perry welding students compete in state contest

Four students from the DMACC Perry VanKirk Career Academy Welding Academy competed Friday in the Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 33 High School State Welding Contest in Des Moines.

The DMACC Perry welding students competing included Kevin Juarez Perez of Perry, Kain Killmer of Perry, Martha Turrado of Perry and Maddie Morgan of Ogden. DMACC welding instructors Jim Von Behren and Brent Rowe accompanied the students.

Killmer took first place in the torch cutting category. He and the second-place winner received a welder. Additional awards included welding hoods and gear.

The statewide contest included 138 welders representing 40 schools across Iowa. The competition was in shielded metallic arc welding (SMAW) in all positions on plate.
