Local high school students interested in exploring career classes at the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) VanKirk Center attended a Career Discovery Day Thursday in Perry.

Students learned about the various DMACC programs, including automotive technology, business administration, criminal justice, health occupations and marketing.

Parents were also welcome to join students in hands-on activities and interactive sessions and to share lunch. They received information about the Perry Center High School Academy programs and heard from current professionals during area workplace tours.

Tours included a trip to Beneventi Chevrolet in Granger for students interested in auto tech and a visit to the Perry Public Safety offices to learn about careers in criminal justice.

“There are numerous job opportunities within all of these these careers,” said DMACC VanKirk Academy Program Director Hollie Coon. “This is a fun event that also allows students and their parents to get a better understanding of these professions and what it takes to be prepared to enter these fields.”
