DES MOINES — Woodward-Granger fell for the second and third times in their last four WCAC games Thursday as Des Moines Christian pulled off a doubleheader sweep, winning 2-1 and 10-5.
The games carried some additional significance after the postseason brackets were revealed earlier this week. The two teams could meet in the district finals in Granger.
DMC (20-7, 16-5) was the visitor in the first game and took a 2-0 lead with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. W-G (17-7, 15-6) countered with a run in the fifth, but could not move the scoreboard again in suffering the loss.
Brandon Worley went the distance for the Hawks and was handed the loss. He allowed two runs on five hits and three walks while striking out three.
Tate Lettow had two singles and a RBI for W-G, with Bryce Achenbach adding a hit and scoring the sole run.
Brett Shelton struck out eight and yielded a run on eight hits in a complete game win for the Lions.
He helped his own cause with a double, single and RBI while Grant Christy had a single, double and drew a walk.
Five runs in the top of the third allowed the Hawks to tie the nightcap, but the Lions tacked on three runs in the fourth and two in the sixth to pull away for the victory.
W-G used five pitchers with Caden Easter starting and throwing one inning. Jay Dorenkamp pitched 2-2/3 frames, Trevor Simmons 1-1/3 and Reese Jamsion two-thirds of an inning while Collin Nardini recorded one out. Dorenkamp allowed seven hits, Easter four, Nardini three and Simmons and Jamison one each.
Dorenkamp yielded five runs, Easter four, Nardini two and Simmons one, all of which were earned. Simmons walked three and Dorenkamp and Nardini two each, with Easter, Dorenkamp and Nardini all striking out two while Simmons and Jamison had one strikeout apiece.
W-G stole nine bases in the loss, with Achenbach swiping three bags and Worley and Joe Rhodes two each. Worley, Simmons, Rhodes and Achenbach all had RBIs. Achenbach had a double and a single, with Jamison, Simmons, Worley and Pacey Moats each providing base hits.
Trey Castile threw 4-1/3 innings for DMC for the win, yielding five runs (two earned) on six hits and two walks while striking out four. Andrew Fox pitched 2-2/3 innings, issuing one walk and fanning six.
Cal Matthes had two doubles and a RBI, with Shelton providing three hits and two RBIs while Fox had two singles and two RBIs.
W-G steps out of conference for a trip to CAM Monday before hosting WCAC foe AC/GC Tuesday and non-conference Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont Wednesday.
