The annual Church of the Brethren ice cream social in Dallas Center offered a wealth of choice desserts topped with homemade ice cream.

As we roll along with the summer, we keep coming up with ice cream socials. This was the case with the annual Dallas Center Church of the Brethren event, which is held every year on a Wednesday evening in July. This year’s ice cream social was held July 18.

Dan Haymond and I attended this event last year. I remember stopping in the Dallas Center Library and asking them where this event was located. Dan and I thought this church may be located in the country. The people in the library were not really able to help us.

We drove around a little and stopped and asked a lady walking her dog if she knew where this church was. She did not know.

We drove around a little more and found out that this church was in viewing distance of the library. It was a block away. This shows how observant the citizenry in Dallas Center was at that time.

This year Dan could not go because he was working out of town. I decided to leave work in Polk City and drive to Granger and then take County Road F31 to Minburn and then to Dallas Center.

I got to the event just after 5 p.m. A large crowd was starting to come in for the food.

The menu was beef burgers, chips, homemade ice cream, a variety of pies and cakes and beverages.

The money raised is used for church needs and mission projects. I could not find anyone who could remember how long this event has been held. I know for the past three years it has been held, and I imagine for many more years prior to that.

This coming week will be busy, with the Linden United Methodist Church holding their annual ice cream social Saturday, and the Minburn United Methodist Church should be hosting their ice cream social soon. I understand that they just need to get together to make the ice cream. The Rippey UMC will be having their second ice cream social in September.

I hope there will be other events.
