Drake political scientist to speak Thursday on 2020 election

Drake University Political Science Professor Dennis Goldford of the Humanities Iowa Speakers Bureau will deliver a lecture, "The Election of 2020: Looking Backward, Looking Forward," at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 14 at the Perry Public Library.

With the eyes of the nation turning to Iowa and our destiny-directing role in the Feb. 3 Iowa Caucuses, the Perry Public Library and Humanities Iowa are bringing Perry-area voters an opportunity for rational discussion Thursday when Dr. Dennis Goldford delivers his lecture, “The Election of 2020: Looking Backward, Looking Forward,” at 6:30 p.m. in the library’s community room.

Goldford is a political science professor at Drake University and has provided political commentary for KCCI-TV, Iowa Public Radio and other media organizations. He is co-author with Hugh Winebrenner of the third edition of “The Iowa Caucuses: the Making of a Media Event.”

The political scientist will examine the surprising 2016 presidential election and 2018 midterm election and explore likely explanations for the results in both. Attendees will be asked to consider the tasks ahead for both major political parties in the approaching caucuses and 2020 presidential election.

Goldford is a member of the Humanities Iowa Speakers Bureau, and his appearance is funded by Humanities Iowa, the National Endowment for the Humanities and Perry Public Library. The event is free and open to the public. The Perry Public Library is handicap accessible. For more information, call 515-465-3569.
