A Des Moines man leveled a crab apple tree with his vehicle Friday in downtown Perry while attempting to multitask.
Birhane Zewale Desta of 1222 E. Emma Ave., #33, in Des Moines was entering Third Street from the Raccoon Valley Bank parking lot Friday when he realized the rear passenger door was ajar.
As Desta attempted to close the door while driving, his vehicle “swerved toward the left side of the street, jumped the curb and struck a crab apple tree next to the parking lot and then entered the Raccoon Valley Bank parking lot again,” according to a report of the Perry Police Department.
There were no injuries in the incident, and Desta’s 1997 Honda Accord suffered an estimated $400 in damage.
“The tree was broken off at the ground,” the police report said.
