A drunk-driving Perry man plowed his pickup truck into a house early Saturday.
Heladio Hernandez Cortez, 26, of 1824 Sixth St., Perry, was charged with first-offense OWI, reckless driving, no license and no insurance.
The incident began about 1 a.m. Saturday at a residence in the 2100 block of Sunflower Street in north-central Perry, where Hernandez Cortez crashed his 2011 GMC Yukon into the west side of the house.
No injuries were reported. The occupants of the residence were asleep upstairs when the crash occurred.
Hernandez Cortez was apparently proceeding eastbound on Dewey Avenue when he failed to negotiate the northward turn on Winter Street and instead drove straight into the house, causing extensive damage.
A witness said Hernandez Cortez attempted to flee the scene but was detained by neighbors until the arrival of law enforcement.
Officers of the Perry Police Department made contact with Hernandez Cortez, who presented with “glossy and watery” eyes and the “odor of an alcoholic beverage on his person,” according to court records.
Hernandez Cortez is held in the Dallas County Jail on a $1,000 cash or surety bond, He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing July 15 in Dallas County District Court.
Hernandez Cortez was convicted of public intoxication in 2022 in Dallas County District Court.
