Elections commissioner reminds voters of impending deadlines

Dallas County Auditor and Commissioner of Elections Julia Helm encouraged everyone Monday who wishes to vote in the Tuesday, Nov. 8 general election to register to vote or request an absentee ballot by 5 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 24.

Polls will be open Tuesday, Nov. 8 from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Voter eligibility Requirements:  In order to vote in the general election, one must be a U.S. citizen, 18 years of age, not currently judged by a court to be “incompetent to vote” and not convicted of a felony (unless one has received a restoration of rights).

Absentee Voting:  Absentee ballots for the Nov. 8, 2022, general election will be available to be voted in the Dallas County Auditor’s office beginning Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2022.

Absentee ballots may be cast in person at the Dallas County Auditor’s office at 210 N. 10th St. in Adel during regular office hours Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. from Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2022, until Monday, Nov. 7, 2022 at 5 p.m.

An absentee ballot may be downloaded here. Forms are now available at the Dallas County Auditor’s office and online at the Iowa Secretary of State’s website. In order for one to receive an absentee ballot by mail, one must make a request in writing.

All requests for ballots to be mailed must be received by the Auditor’s office by 5 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 24, 2022. In order for your ballot to count, it must be returned by the close of polls on election day, that is, by 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2022.

Voter Registration:  The deadline to register to vote is 5 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 24, 2022. The Dallas County Auditor’s Office will be open on Monday, Oct. 24, 2022, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

After this date, a new voter can still register at the Auditor’s office or register on election day at the polling place in the precinct where one currently resides. The voter will be required to show proof of residency and identity. One form of ID is a valid Iowa driver’s license with the voter’s current address. Proof of residency must be current within the last 45 days. Valid forms include:

  • Property tax statement
  • Utility bill
  • Bank statement
  • Paycheck
  • Government check
  • Other government document

A current photo ID which is valid and contains an expiration date can be used for proof of identity.  Valid documents include:

  • Out-of-state driver’s license
  • Non-driver identification card
  • U.S. passport
  • U.S. military ID
  • ID card issued by employer
  • Iowa high school or college ID
  • Veteran ID

Where to Pre-Register:  The Dallas County Auditor’s office at 210 N. 10th St. in Adel on weekdays between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.  Registration forms can also be found on the Iowa Secretary of State website. Send forms to: Dallas County Auditor’s Office; 210 N. 10th St., Adel, IA 50003.

Registration Changes:  Name, party and address changes, if you are already registered within Dallas County, may be made at any time up to and including election day. Prior to election day, changes are made by the same means as voter registration. On election day, changes may be made at the voter’s polling place. If the voter has changed his or her address, the voter will need to go to the voter’s new polling site.
