Personnel from four local agencies and the Mercy One air ambulance rushed to a sandbar along the Raccoon River west of Perry Sunday afternoon for a medical emergency.
A 58-year-old woman was fishing along the banks of the river with her daughter and at least one grandchild when she suddenly required medical attention. The Perry Police Department, Perry First Responders, Perry Volunteer Fire Department and Dallas County EMS all reacted to the call for aid.
Once on the scene and having assessed the situation, Perry officials quickly summoned the Mercy One air ambulance, which transported the woman to Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.
Crews initially gathered along Park Street west of Perry and then used specially designed ATVs from the PVFD to reach the scene, approximately 150 yards south of the bridge. The ATVs in question are outfitted with emergency medical equipment and allow two or more firemen or others to reach difficult locations.
