Creature comforts were free for all at the 2019 Dallas County Fair in Adel. The 2020 fair has been cancelled.

The Dallas County Fair Association Board of Directors announced Friday the cancellation of the 2020 Dallas County Fair. It follows the announcement Monday by the Adel Partners Chamber of Commerce of the cancellation of the Adel Sweet Corn Festival in August.

In a statement, the fair board said that “the circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic and the extensive precautions necessary to ensure the health and safety of fair-goers, volunteers and exhibitors” necessitated the cancellation of both the June rodeo and the July grounds and grandstand entertainments.

“In consultation with the Dallas County Health Department, the state of Iowa and other
stakeholders, it was determined social distancing guidelines and requirements for mass
gatherings prohibit an adequate fair experience for the thousands of fair-goers that fill
our barns, arenas and grandstands,” the board statement said.

“The Dallas County Fair Board sincerely thanks the community, sponsors, supporters,
volunteers and the hardworking exhibitors for patience and understanding as we
navigate these unchartered waters together,” the board said.

The Iowa State Fair Board of Directors announced Monday that it will make a decision by June 15 on whether to go ahead with the 2020 Iowa State Fair, according to the fair’s website.
