Proper tackling technique was the focus of several drills Monday during the first day of official practice for the Perry football team.

Monday marked the start of official practices for fall sports teams across Iowa.

Gridirons were marked by football teams, with volleyball teams pounding the ball in courts statewide while country roads, city streets and parks found cross country teams counting down the miles. Pools were filled as well, as girls swimming began at the roughly 60 schools offering the sport.

The Bluejay and Jayette cross country teams open their season August 24 at the Gilbert Invitational, which is held on the Iowa State University course in Ames.

The Bluejay gridders gather around their coaches during a break Monday, the first day of official practices for fall prep sports across Iowa.

The Jayette netter begin their first season under new head coach John Fulton when the volleyball season kicks off August 24 with a trip to Fort Dodge St. Edmond.

The 24th will see a trifecta of Perry sports opening, as the Jayette swimmers are to host Algona at the MCB pool.

The Perry football season kicks off the next evening when the Bluejays travel to Alleman to tackle North Polk in the first of their two non-district games.
