Fareway Manager Travis Landgrebe, left, presents a check to Marlene Johnson, member of Team Bookworm, the Perry Public Library's representative to the Relay for Life of Northern Dallas County, for $664.35. The money was raised by donations made by Fareway customers in Perry over labor Day week.

Generous customers of the Perry Fareway store donated $664.35 during Labor Day week toward the Relay for Life of Northern Dallas County, and Fareway Manager Travis Landgrebe presented the raised funds to Team Bookworm member Marlene Johnson in a brief ceremony Saturday.

Team Bookworm is the Perry Public Library’s fundraising arm for the Relay for Life of Northern Dallas County, which will hold its major annual event next Saturday, Sept. 17 at the Jim Kaufman Track at Perry High School beginning at 10 a.m.

All proceeds from Fareway’s Labor Day roundup support the Relay for Life of Northern Dallas County, which celebrates the lives of cancer victims and survivors and funds cancer research.

The American Cancer Society, which sponsors the Relay for Life, estimates there will be about 1.7 million new cancer cases diagnosed in 2016 and about 600,000 cancer deaths in the U.S.

This year’s Relay for Life features the Kick Cancer Collection Connection. Participants are invited to collect their loose change and bring it to Relay where they will then start at one end of the track and lay out the change. The goal is to make a complete circuit of the track and close the circle of change, which will all be donated at the end of the night.
