A faulty nozzle on a gasoline pump at the Kum and Go at 1219 First Ave. caused a fuel spill about 8:30 p.m. Thursday and brought the Perry Volunteer Fire Department’s hazmat team to the scene.
According to an eyewitness account, a customer was filling the tank of her automobile, and the nozzle failed to automatically shut off the pumping when the tank was full.
The overflowing gasoline squirted geyser-like from the vehicle’s side, according to the owner of the vehicle, who appeared shaken by the incident.
The same gas pump and nozzle were involved in an incident about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in which a customer “drove off with the gas nozzle” still in the vehicle, and “gas spilled around the parking lot,” according to the Perry Police Report.
An observer speculated that the service person who repaired the hose and nozzle after the Wednesday incident might not have correctly reset the shut-off mechanism.
There were no injuries in the Thursday night spillage. Perry firefighters soaked up the spilled gasoline with an absorbent material and then swept up the remainder.
The Perry Police Department also responded.
