A fire broke out in an ice machine about 8:30 p.m. Friday at the Casey’s General Store on east Willis Avenue.

There were no injuries.

Casey’s clerks Hollywood Grabill and Delaney Eiteman said they first noticed an odor of burning plastic and when they approached the ice machine, they saw flames.

Food Service Leader Misty Clark promptly extinguished the blaze with a fire extinguisher.

The Perry Police Department, Perry First Responders and Perry Volunteer Fire Department responded to the incident, which is under investigation.

The coincidence of fire and ice brings to mind a poem by Robert Frost, called “Fire and Ice.”

Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To know that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

Happily for Perry, the world ended in neither fire nor ice Friday, but retail trading soon resumed as usual.
