The Des Moines office of the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a flash flood watch in effect until 8 a.m. Monday for the Perry area and much of central Iowa.

The NWS said slow-moving thunderstorms capable of producing heavy rain are expected to continue overnight, with rainfall amounts between 2 and 4 inches likely and locally higher amounts possible.

The primary concern is in urban and poorly drained areas, the NWS said in issuing the flash flood watch late Sunday night.

The watch covers large portions of central Iowa, south central Iowa and west central Iowa and includes Dallas County and the following counties: Boone, Greene, Hamilton, Jasper, Polk, Story, Webster, Appanoose, Clarke, Decatur, Lucas, Madison, Marion, Monroe, Warren and Wayne.

The NWS reminds travelers that flash-flood conditions are very dangerous. Travelers should monitor ongoing forecasts and be prepared to take action should flash flood warnings be issued.
