The bridge over the Raccoon River on U.S. Highway 169 in Adel was closed starting at 9 p.m. Tuesday.

The U.S. Highway 169 bridge crossing the Raccoon River in northern Adel remained closed Wednesday morning after Dallas County Emergency Management Services’ decision to stop traffic on the flooded roadway Tuesday at 9.m.

Flooding following heavy rains caused water to cover the bridge, making it unsafe for use by motorists. The bridge will be closed until the water recedes, according to authorities.

An Iowa Department of Transportation worker erected Road Closed and Detour signs at the intersection of U.S. Highway 169 and Iowa Highway 44 shortly after 9 p.m. He said the detour would take southbound traffic on U.S. Highway 169 west on Iowa Highway 44 to County Road P58, south on County Road P58 to Old Highway 6 and east on Old Highway 6 to U.S. Highway 169.
