Fort Dodge man arrested in connection with Scranton bank heist

Zachary Michael Anderson Wailes, 27, of Fort Dodge was arrested Saturday on charges of first-degree robbery and first-degree theft.

JEFFERSON, Iowa — A Fort Dodge man was arrested Saturday morning on suspicion of robbing the Peoples Trust and Savings Bank in Scranton Thursday, according to Greene County Sheriff Jack Williams.

Zachary Michael Anderson Wailes, 27, of Fort Dodge was charged with first-degree robbery and first-degree theft.

The Greene County Sheriff’s office would not confirm whether Wailes is held in the Greene County Jail or the amount of his bond.

Wailes was convicted of second-degree theft and third-degree burglary in 2013 in Carroll County District Court. He was convicted of third-degree burglary in 2013 in Greene County District Court. He was convicted of third-degree burglary in 2013 in Calhoun County District Court. He was convicted of fourth-degree theft in 2013 in Carroll County District Court. He was convicted of third-degree theft in 2014 in Webster County District Court. He was convicted of third-degree theft in 2015 in Story County District Court. Wailes was arrested in Stuart Dec. 5, 2020, on a charge of first-degree theft. The case is pending in Adair County District Court.

The case remains under investigation, Williams said. Assisting the Greene County Sheriff’s office in the investigation were the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Gaming Enforcement, Carroll County Sheriff’s office, Carroll Police Department, Calhoun County Sheriff’s office, Lake City Police Department, Boone County Sheriff’s office, Boone Police Department and the Ames Police Department.

*A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is innocent until and unless proven guilty.
