Four Bluejays place at Ames Invite

AMES — Eight wrestlers represented Perry at the Jack Mendenhall Invitational Saturday, with four Bluejays earning a final placing.

West Des Moines Valley edged Indianola, 207-202, for the team title. DC-G was third at 195, with Perry 12th among 15 teams with 63 points.

Senior Erick Funez (17-10) finished 4-0 to win the 138-pound bracket. Funez opened with a pin, then won on decisions of 6-3, 5-3 and 8-4, respectively.

Ninth-ranked Cole Nelson (19-5) was third at 113 pounds. The sophomore was 3-1 with two pins and a 5-3 win in Tiebreaker I.

Fifth-place honors went to 145-pound senior Jacob Nelson (21-6), who was 2-2 with a pair of wins by decision, with senior 182-pounder Cole Snyder (9-12) 3-2 with two pins and decision to place eighth in his division.

Wilber Ramirez (12-11) was 1-3 with a pin at 160 pounds, with Tanner Burgin (9-11 at 126), Ever Tobar (4-6 at 152) and Zach Darr (2-17 at 220) all unable to win before suffering two losses.

Perry left the 106, 120, 132, 170, 195 and 285 weight classes open.

Perry hosts Creston/Orient-Macksburg and Winterset for a triangular Thursday before entertaining a large and talented field at the Bluejay Invitational Saturday.
