The city of Bouton put is putting its $5,000 Dallas County Foundation grant to good use in building a new Veterans of Foreign Wars monument at the corner of Beaver Avenue and 128th Place, which is speeding toward completion.

The design of the memorial to Bouton’s war dead includes a pie-shaped cement pad on whch brick pillars stand, where the honored names will be displayed. Landscaping and a bench will complete the corner project.

Kevin Burkett, a Perry bricklayer, said he is “proud and honored to design and build the VFW monument in Bouton.” Burkett said Frank Manning poured the concrete slab.

Along with the grant from the Dallas County Foundation, the Bouton Betterment Committee, led by longtime Bouton Public Works Director David Thornburg, is raising funds toward the project’s $13,000 goal.

“They are still taking donations to get all of the veterans names inside,” Burkett said, “so if you would like to contribute, get in touch with Dave ‘Bubba’ Thornburg in Bouton.”

Thornburg can be reached at 515-240-6905.

A regular feature of every Bouton breakfast is the Bouton Betterment Committee’s fund-raising can for the VFW memorial.
