The Relay for Life of Dallas County purple potties will be popping up around town starting Sept. 16. A $10 donation removes the yard ornament, and a $20 donation sends it to any yard of the donor’s choice. A $30 donation buys insurance against the Flushing Out Cancer purple potty.

The annual Relay For Life of Dallas County will take place Saturday, Sept. 28 from 4–9:30 p.m. at Dewey Field at the Perry High School. The theme for the 2019 relay is Game On!  Join the Fight! Playing Games But Not With Cancer.

The Relay for Life is not limited only to teams. Everyone is invited to come and join in the day’s activities, which include:

  • Silent Auction
  • On-site games
  • Sitting and visiting with friends
  • Walking the track
  • Luminaria celebration
  • Food, with all proceeds going to the American Cancer Society

All cancer survivors are invited to attend the Relay for Life as honored guests and be recognized during the Opening Ceremonies at 4 p.m., which will be followed by the survivor lap and a dinner/reception. Everyone is then welcome to stay, enjoy the Relay and participate in the activities. We will have a special caregiver lap, recognizing caregivers for the support that they have provided to their loved ones.

This year’s Honorary Survivor is Kay Finneseth.

Luminarias honor every life touched by cancer. You can dedicate them to a loved one lost, to someone currently battling or to anyone who is a survivor. When you attend a Relay for Life, you will see the Luminarias decorated with names and sometimes messages to the honored ones.

At 9 p.m. everyone shares an emotional moment as each Luminaria is lit in remembrance of a life touched by cancer. Lights are turned off and together we take a moment of silence to remember the loved ones the lights are dedicated to. Then everyone walks the track in silence as the names of all the luminaria are read aloud.

Luminaria bags are available for $10. You may decorate your own bag or have our team members decorate one or more for you. Contact Kenia Alarcon or any committee member to get your Luminaria, which will also be available at the Relay.

The Relay for Life teams hold several fundraisers throughout the year. Five more fundraisers are planned for 2019:

Sept. 9-14 Fairway Round-up. Support the Relay for Life of Dallas County by rounding up the price of your Fareway purchase to the nearest dollar.

Sept. 16-28 Help Flush out Cancer. You will see soon purple traveling toilets begin to appear around town. If the purple porcelain lands in your yard, the plumbing policies are: $10 to have the toilet taken away, $20 to have it taken it and relocated at the home of a friend and $30 for insurance against the preceding possibilities to insure it does not come back to you during the current Relay season. Contact any committee member for more information.

Sept. 28 Kick Cancer Collection Connection. Collect your loose change and bring it to Relay. Coins will be laid out around the track. We would like to go all the way around the track to form a collection connection. At the end of the Relay, the coins will be picked up and donated to the Relay For Life of Dallas County.

Oct. 19 Create For Life. This 12-hour event includes work space for your projects, two  meals, with snacks and beverages provided, vendors, massages, door prizes, companionship and fun.
