Generations Wealth Advisors at 1126 Second St. in downtown Perry formed in 2020 with wealth management advisors Dean Haaland, left, Alex Sturm, center, and Vince Sturm.

Generations come and go like leaves that fall from trees.

For Generations Wealth Advisors of Perry, however, new growth recently appeared in a merger with Haaland Financial Services and a move to the Haaland offices at 1126 Second St. in downtown Perry. Generations Wealth Advisors owner and wealth management advisor Vince Sturm explained the new partnership.

“What prompted the move is I’m going to acquire the business when Dean’s ready to retire,” Sturm said. “I’ve brought Alex, my oldest son, on board. He’s in the process of studying and preparing to take the securities exams.”

Alex Sturm is a 2017 graduate of the University of Iowa, where he studied finance and leadership management. He said he was always interested in finance when growing up and learned about the industry through his dad, and his dream of working with his dad to build a community and family practice is about to be realized.

The junior Sturm currently works for a large Des Moines firm and is studying for his licensure exams in securities and insurance, administered by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority Inc.

“I did it all 20-plus years ago,” Vince Sturm said, referring to the “daunting” battery of licensure exams his son is studying for. He said financial advisors must also regularly take continuing education classes throughout their careers in order to keep up with changes in industry regulations.

Dean Haaland entered the financial field 38 years ago and has seen many ups and downs in the U.S. economy, from the farm crisis of the 1980s to the 2008 collapse of the investment banks to the current COVID-caused downturn.

In his spare time, Haaland enjoys spending time with Terri, his wife of more than 40 years, and their three children and four grandchildren. He numbers golf, woodworking and traveling among his hobbies.

Sturm said the coronavirus kept him working from home from March to June. Servicing his clients online was not a new wrinkle, he said, because he has numerous clients in the Des Moines metro and out of state who have had online relations with him for years.

Sturm has worked in the financial field for more than 20 years, creating strategic solutions to help business owners, individuals and families solve their financial and risk management issues through wealth management, retirement planning, business ownership succession planning and estate planning.

With his elder son on board, Vince Sturm has hopes his younger son, Aaron Sturm, a University of Iowa student of business analytics, might also join the team in time. Sturm’s wife, Kris Sturm, has also been a mainstay of the family business, he said.

“This partnership with Dean gives us some longevity in the business,” Sturm said. “I’m 52 and have another good 15 years, so it will be good to have Alex here to help with the business once Dean decides to step away from the desk.”
