Gilbert cruises to wins over visiting Perry

GILBERT — Class 4A second-ranked Gilbert strolled past the Perry girls, 71-14, in Raccoon River Conference girls basketball Tuesday. The win for the Tiger girls was followed by a 57-27 victory for the home-standing boys.

Gilbert (6-0, 4-0) rolled to an 18-4 lead after the first quarter, then kept Perry without a point in the second frame for a 42-18 halftime lead, a margin that swelled to 62-9 entering the final period.

The hosts finished with 28 steals as Perry struggled to simply bring the ball up the court and repeatedly dropped or mishandled passes. Emma Bulman had 23 points for Gilbert, with Ava Hawthorne adding 12 and Thea Rotto 10.

Perry (1-4, 0-4) received seven points from Lydia Olejniczak, three from Jayna Kenney and two each from Michelle Tobar and Kathryn West.

The Bluejays were outrebounded, 44-23, in being kept winless after five games overall and four in RRC play. Gilbert moved to 2-3, 2-2 with the win.

Perry faced deficits of 19-6, 40-10, and 52-16 after each of the first three stanzas.

Freshman Brandon Mahler led Perry with nine points. June Rey Riesberg added seven points, Jeremy Mateso five points, Drake Levan three, Jordan Ochoa two and Matthew Booker one.

Mateso had six rebounds and three steals, with Ochoa grabbing four boards while Riesberg had five steals and Caden Steva three assists.

Ethan Vesey had 14 points for the hosts and Birk Hanson 11.

Perry hosts North Polk Friday and ADM Tuesday to conclude the pre-holiday portion of their season.
