GRANGER — Woodward-Granger’s baseball team was rolling along one week ago, sitting at 25-0 and ranked fourth in Class 2A.

Five games later and concerns the Hawks may have blown a tire will be hard to ignore, as a 6-0 loss Wednesday was the fourth setback in the past five contests, dropping the now-fifth ranked W-G squad to 26-4.

Two of the losses were something of a head-scratcher, as 4-18 CMB and 12-11 Greene County each prevailed, but the other two — at No. 10 Van Meter (23-4) and Wednesday to Class 3A No. 7 Gilbert (22-7) were far easy to understand.

Gilbert scored twice in the third inning and three more times in the top of the fourth to open a 5-0 lead, with a final tally crossing the plate in the seventh.

Spencer Hanson (8-1) suffered his first loss of the season on the mound after yielding six runs — only two of which were earned — on six hits and four walks in six full innings. He finished with four strikeouts.

Brandon Worley tossed three total pitches and yielded a hit, with Caden Easter allowing one hit while striking out one in an inning of relief.

Marcus McConahay had two singles and a walk for the Hawks, with Joe Rhodes and Cole Theisen also drawing walks. Theisen, Reese Jamison, Bryce Achenbach and Matt Rhodes joined Hanson in recording base hits.

Statistical information from Gilbert was not available. W-G travels to Audubon tonight and Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont (game in Eddyville) Friday.

W-G begins postseason play Tuesday when they host the winner if Saturday’s 2A District 12 battle between Central Decatur and Mt. Ayr. The game will follow the 5 p.m. game pitting Des Moines Christian against either Interstate-35 or Clarke. Tuesday’s two winners would then meet, in Granger, at 7 p.m. Saturday in the District Final, with the Substate 6 Final to be played July 18 in Indianola at 7 p.m.
