With strong southerly winds blowing over the severe drought in Dallas County farm fields, grass fires have been frequent over the last few weeks, keeping local firefighters on their toes at all hours.

Saturday afternoon saw a field fire that also burned a dump truck and semi-tractor trailer near 170th Street and T Avenue. The Woodward Volunteer Fire Department responded, and additional water was hauled to the scene by the Dallas Center Volunteer Fire Department, Granger Volunteer Fire Department and Minburn Volunteer Fire Department.

A fire along Iowa Highway 44 near J Avenue brought five agencies to the scene about 9:30 p.m. Friday. The Adel Volunteer Fire Department received mutual aid from the volunteer firefighters in Minburn, Redfield and Dallas Center, and the Dallas County Sheriff’s office provided traffic control.

Firefighters from Woodward and Dallas Center responded at midday Tuesday to a grass fire near 180th Street and Pioneer Avenue.
