The obstacles standing in the way of a second consecutive state softball qualifier banner were revealed yesterday.

The Perry Hy-Vee fired up their outdoor grill Monday for a send-off meet-and-greet honoring the Perry softball team.

The Jayettes (24-12), ranked 15th in Class 4A, face No. 6 Oskaloosa (27-7) at 7:30 p.m. in a state quarterfinal at Harlan Rogers Park in Fort Dodge.

A victory would send Perry to Thursday’s semifinal at 1 p.m. against the winner of ninth-ranked Fairfield (27-11) and 14th-rated Creston (24-11). The top half of the bracket has No. 1 Carlisle (36-6) facing unranked Charles City (24-10) while No. 12 Boone (26-9) plays No. 13 Heelan Catholic (26-10) in the other contest.

A loss sends the victim into Wednesday’s consolation bracket, with the consolation semifinals played at 12 p.m. and both the fifth and seventh-place games at 4 p.m. The semifinal winners meet for the title Friday at 12:27 p.m. with the third-place game Friday at 11:30 a.m.

While the team encourages as many blue-clad and boisterous Perry loyalists as possible to attend the game, both those going and those not able to attend will have a chance to salute the Jayettes on their way out of town. The Jayettes and their wildly decorated bus will depart PHS at 4 p.m. and travel west down Willis Avenue to downtown Perry. Supporters are asked to line the route and send the team north on an encouraging note.
