In the wake of Tuesday’s wounding of Perry Police Chief Eric Vaughn, who was shot in the thigh while disarming a deranged gunman, numerous local individuals and businesses have stepped up to show their support for Vaughn and the whole Perry Police Department.

Tiffany Olejniczak of Perry said that she “wanted to organize something that would allow the community to express their support for Chief Vaughn and the Police Department,” and she came up with the idea of yard signs and stickers.

The minimum donation for a double-sided yard sign with stake is $20, and the stickers are $5 each, Olejniczak said. All proceeds will be donated to the Perry Peace Officers Association for the purchase of equipment, she said. For more information, send Olejniczak a Facebook message.

On the commercial side, the Perry Hy-Vee packed their cookie case Tuesday with Back-the-Blue-themed sweets in Vaughn’s honor, pledging to give 10% of all cookie sales “directly to the Perry Police Department.”

Additionally, an ice cream truck has also promised to donate 25% of its sales on Monday, May 16 to the Perry Police Department in appreciation.

Support for any cause is never universal, of course, and praise of the police gave rise in turn to blame. The critical comments, which always abound on Facebook, led the administrator of the Perry Iowa Community Facebook page to ask that visitors “refrain from any negativity towards the efforts of the community for support towards Perry PD and Chief Vaughn. If you don’t want to show support or back our officers in blue, so be it . . . but please do us all a favor and scroll on.”

For his part, Vaughn thanked the community Thursday in a message on the Perry Police Department Facebook page.

“I wanted to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their well wishes and shows of support for me and our department this week,” Vaughn said. “From the flowers to the food and the cards, it all shows what a great community we live in and why our department does what we do. I also want to especially thank all the officers on scene with me that day, Perry PD, our dispatchers, Dallas County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa State Patrol. Their quick actions were instrumental in securing the suspect and bringing this situation to an end. A special thanks to our Dallas County EMS, Mercy Life Flight and everyone at Mercy for my care and treatment. Thanks again for you support now and in the future.”
