The 2018 Rock the Block neighborhood revitalization program has plans for Van Meter, Dallas Center and Perry.

Dallas County Habitat for Humanity will spearhead three neighborhood revitalization projects this season in the 2018 Rock the Block program.

The communities scheduled for work are Van Meter from May 24 to 26, Dallas Center from Sept. 13 to 15 and Perry from Sept. 27 to 29.

There is a connection between housing and good health. While housing can protect us from extreme weather and provide safe environments for families to live, learn, grow and form social bonds, houses and apartments can also present unhealthy or unsafe environments. For example”

  • Almost one in four homes in the U.S. is estimated to contain lead-based paint (either inside or outside), which is harmful to the brains and nervous systems of young children.
  • Asthma can be exacerbated by indoor allergens such as mold and dust, and mold or mildew from water leaks can cause respiratory and allergy problems.
  • Uneven flooring or lack of ramps can lead to falls and injuries.
  • Poorly sealed windows and doors mean high heating and cooling bills, reducing the amount of money available for nutritious food or medications.

The goal of Dallas County Habitat for Humanity’s Rock the Block program is to repair homes and improve the overall condition of our communities. These events are opportunities for individuals and groups to volunteer for painting, weatherization, landscaping and yard clean up and exterior repairs.

The date for the first project, in Van Meter, is approaching quickly. If you are a homeowner in Van Meter who needs help with any of the work described, please contact Dallas County Health Navigation at 515-993-3750 for an application as soon as possible.

Applications for the September projects in Dallas Center and Perry are being accepted at this time also. For more information about Habitat for Humanity, visit their website.
