Hundreds fed in family style at the annual Harvest Home dinner at the First Presbyterian Church in Grimes Sunday.

Weekends are a big time during the beloved “Dinner Season,” and such was the case last weekend with two dinners, one held locally and the other in far off Grimes.

On Saturday the Trinity Lutheran Church, located on Iowa Street in Perry, hosted their annual fall harvest dinner. The main course this year was chicken and noodles. The Trinity Lutheran Church each year hosts a dinner in an elegant atmosphere with many attendees.

The pastor of the church, the Rev. Ken Bose, sang many religious and popular favorites while playing along on his guitar. He also made an apple pie for the occasion.

Funds raised will be used for various mission projects throughout the year, Bose said. The purpose of the dinner is to provide opportunities for fellowship.

Another favorite venue during this season of joyful dining is the Sunday evening dinner held at the First Presbyterian Church in Grimes. This is a full-scale Thanksgiving dinner, with turkey, dressing, real mashed potatoes, green beans, giblet gravy, dinner rolls and dessert.

Family values reign at the Harvest Home.

Attendees have to wait in the sanctuary for their number to be called, and then they head to the dining area. Everyone is seated at one of the many long tables. The servers bring out the food and serve the diners family style.

Everyone dishes up their own food and then passes the bowls along from hand to hand, just like at a traditional family-values meal. The servers keep the bowls filled, and the diners enjoy much food and fellowship.

Although Grimes is growing, the First Presbyterian Church is tucked away on the west side of town. The neighborhood resembles that of a small rural community where American values still reign.

Monies raised will also be used throughout the year for many mission projects, the leaders said.
