Hawk girls avoid upset in low scoring affair

WOODWARD — The Madrid girls hoopsters were 0-20 before stunning Ogden, 44-24, Friday in a Class 2A Region 7 First Round contest.

On Tuesday the Tigers tried to muddy the waters again by upsetting host Woodward-Granger and nearly pulled off the feat, with the Hawks doing just enough to persevere, 27-24.

The win sends W-G (18-4) to a road game Friday at Van Meter (14-8), who topped Interstate-35, 44-25, Tuesday. The Bulldogs handed the Hawks one of their losses this year, claiming a 40-37 win, in Woodward, Jan. 23. Friday’s winner will move to the Region 7 Final Feb. 26 at Marshalltown. Games start at 7 p.m.

W-G trailed Madrid, 9-7, after eight minutes of play Tuesday, with the teams entering the half knotted at 11-all.

The hosts used an 8-4 scoring edge in the third quarter to move into a 19-15 lead before holding on for the victory.

Emma Anderson’s 11 points led the home team, with Finley Fitzgerald scoring seven points and Mae Anderson six. Two points from Darby Nixon and one from Natalie Helbling capped the scoring for the Hawks.

Erin Schieltz had a game high 13 points for Madrid. Hannah Mertz, Gabby Brunner and Ella Santi had three points apiece, with Macy Gibbons adding two.
