Hawk girls split games at Phil Creese Classic

WOODWARD — For the second consecutive Saturday the Woodward-Granger softball team found themselves playing a pair of games on their own diamond, this time in the Phil Creese Classic.

Named in honor of the longtime softball fixture at W-G, the three-game event with the hosts recording a 9-7 win over Pekin, with Saydel dispatching the Panthers in the second game before posting a 13-4 win over the Hawks in the final contest.

W-G sophomore Bree Lesch slap-hits during the fifth inning against Saydel Saturday.

The ol’ skipper would have been proud of the rally his team mounted in the first game, as the Hawks surged from a 7-2 deficit to scored seven runs in the top of the seventh to claim the victory.

Pekin held a 3-2 lead after four frames and had threatened to put the game away with four runs in the bottom of the sixth before the hosts rallied.

Meagan Bandstra was 4-for-4 with a double to lead the way, with Alyssa Bice and Kaycee Major also adding doubles as part of a 10-hit attack.

Riley Jamison picked up the win off the rubber after yielding seven runs (six earned) on 11 hits and four walks. She finished with five strikeouts.

Both teams scored a run in the first inning of the third game, but a three-run top of the third from W-G could not counter four runs in the second, four in the third and three more in the fourth as the Eagles opened a 12-4 gap. A final run for Saydel crossed in the bottom of the fifth, with the game ending on a time limit in the sixth.

Jamison was touched for 13 runs on eight hits and five walks but numerous W-G errors led to eight of the Eagle runs being unearned. The sophomore recorded three strikeouts in the loss.

Bree Lesch was 2-for-3 and scored twice for the Hawks, with Bandstra and Kendra Husmann each hitting a double. Carli Major and Miranda Aunspach also had hits, with Aunspach and Bandstra each scoring once. Husmann had two RBIs, with Bandstra and Jamison both driving in a run apiece.

W-G is off Monday. They host Van Meter Tuesday and Ogden Wednesday before visiting Madrid Thursday for a trio of WCC contests.
