Hawk girls survive Tigers in overtime

WOODWARD, Iowa — Visiting Madrid made a furious push in the waning moments to force overtime Saturday, but Woodward-Granger remained composed and was able to escape with a 43-38 win in their Class 2A Region 7 first round game.

The victory pushes W-G (8-14) into a Tuesday battle at No. 12 Nodaway Valley (18-3). The winner faces the Earlham vs. Van Meter victor Friday at Nodaway Valley. Games begin at 7 p.m.

Madrid (2-20) held an 11-8 lead after one quarter, but W-G rallied to enter the half holding a 19-14 advantage. The Hawks led, 34-26, entering the fourth quarter but began to be plagued with foul trouble, with the Tigers taking advantage for force extra basketball with the teams tied at 37-all.

W-G scored the first three points to move ahead, 40-37, en route to the eventual win.

The hosts finished 15-of-20 at the free throw line, with the visitors 13-of-19 at the stripe.

Grace Deputy had 14 points and Darby Nixon 13 to lead the Hawks. Lexi Bogardus added seven points, Kenzie Dresback five and Georgia Simmons four.

Bogardus and Nixon each sank a 3-pointer, with Nixon splashing 6-of-7 free throws.

Ella Santi sank 9-of-11 foul shots to finish with a team-high 13 points for Madrid, with Josie Springer draining three 3-pointers to score nine points.
