Hawk harriers complete season

GOWRIE, IOWA — Southeast Valley hosted a Class 2A cross country State Qualifying Meet, with Woodward-Granger among the large field participating.

Clarinda (62), Des Moines Christian (66) and Van Meter (73) were 1-2-3 in the girls team race, with W-G 12th of 14 with 302 points. The top trio of boys teams were DMC (62), Clear Lake (70) and Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck (72), with W-G 15th of 15 at 389.

Addison Doughan of Clear Lake won the blue ribbon for the girls in 19 minutes, 6 seconds, with Clare Kelly of Van Meter second in 19:15 and Mayson Hartley of Clarinda third in 19:45.

DMC swept the top three boys spots, with Aaron Fynaardt (15:49), Carson Houg (15:54) and Collin Houg (16:58) crossing in order.

Libby Grell, a sophomore and the only non-senior running for the W-G girls, led her squad by finishing 39th overall in exactly 23 minutes. Sydney Grell was 57th in 24:17, Katie Grell 64th in 24:37, Kenzie Dresback 69th in 25:11 and Chloe Houge 73rd in 25:39 to account for the Hawk scoring.

Elena Bortot (75th, 25:36) and Maddy Mann (82nd, 27:47) ran as well, but did not have their placings used for the team score.

Sophomores Healey Hill (67th, 20:14) and Dillon Limoges (69th, 20:17) led the Hawk boys, with junior Carsten Wright (77th, 20:49) third across the line for the team. Also scoring were freshman Aidan Topolavich (86th, 21:56) and senior Tjaden Smeltzer (90th, 22:17.28).

On the course for W-G as well were Sterling Parkinson (91st, 22:17.66) and freshman Grant Polito (92nd, 22:27).

The Hawks were coached by Dave Smeltzer.
