Hawk harriers run in Huxley Monday

HUXLEY — Each of the Woodward-Granger cross country teams had their chance to compete Monday as the Hawks ran in the Ballard Invitational.

Eighty-one runners raced in the Class B boys varsity event, with Gilbert nipping Nodaway Valley, 57-58, for top honors. Humboldt was third at 99, with W-G 11th of 12 squads with 324 points.

Trevor Faultonson (56th, 20 minutes, 10 seconds) was the first Hawk to finish, with ALex Bice (63rd, 20:34) and Caleb Jones (65th, 20:43) close behind. Also scoring were Keith Braunschweig (67th, 21:08) and Chandler Cavanaugh (73rd, 21:38), with Hunter Pierce (78th, 22:44) and Cody Garland (79th, 22:55) in action for the varsity as well.

The boys Junior Varsity race combined both classes, with 325 harriers packing the course. DC-G was first at 27, Carlisle second at 57 and Gilbert third at 61, with W-G besting Perry, 616-689, for the 21st spot in a 23-team field.

Dylan Steele (99th, 22:26), Sam Peterson (117th, 23:39), Kurt Crouse (127th, 24:13), Nick Bush (129th, 24:24) and Cole Theisen (26:07) scored for the Hawks. with Kainen Fuson (149th, 26:39) and Logan Roll (153rd, 27:50) also running for W-G.

Humboldt won the 72-entrant ‘B’ girls varsity race with 40 points. North Polk (45) was second and Gilbert (69) third, with W-G 11th of 11 at 311.

Natalie Helbling (57th, 25:53) and Posey Robinson (59th, 26:01) were the two quickest Hawks. Josie Noland (63rd, 27:02), Chloe David (66th, 27:47) and Mollie Frost (67th, 27:58) scored for the varisty as well.

W-G had only three runners in the combined JV race and thus did not score team points. DC-G and Ballard each had 52 points, but the former won on a tiebreaker. North Polk was third at 65.

Emily Lingner (35:12), AnnaMae Hanson (37:09) and Hannah Lingner (37:20) ran for the Hawk girls JV.

The classes were also combined for the boys and girls 2-mile junior high race.

ADM (58), North Polk (92) and DC-G (100) were the top three boys teams, with W-G besting Perry, 407-433, for 15th in the 16-team, 217-runner event.

Alex Foster (47th, 14:37), Carsten Wright (73rd, 15:27) and Ryan Fitch (82nd, 16:04) scored for W-G, as did Joel Harney (102nd, 17:33) and Lucas Hansen (103rd, 17:55). Nick Bermel (106th, 18:18) and Landon Bogardus (108th, 18:29) also competed for W-G.

A total of 167 girls ran in their combined grade 7-8 race, with DC-G (76), Ballard (87) and Winterset (97) claiming the top three spots. W-G had four runners and thus did not create a score.

On the course for the Hawks were Sydney Grell (15:49), MaKenzie Dresback (16:38), Katie Grell (16:42) and Kaitlyn Smith (18:30).

W-G will compete Thursday at the Panorama Invitational, then run at ADM Monday and Roland-Story Sept. 21.
