
GREENFIELD, IOWA — The varsity and middle school cross country runners from Woodward-Granger ran the circuit at the Greenfield Golf and County Club Monday in the Wolverine Invitational.
Interstate-35 won the boys side with 43 points, with host Nodaway Valley second at 76 while W-G was seventh of nine with 175 points. The girls title went to Van Meter (28) with Mt. Ayr a distant second (99). W-G scored 131 points to finish sixth in a nine-team field.
Doug Berg of NV won the boys event in 17 minutes, 58 seconds, with Mason Maiers of I-35 second in 18:37.
Dillon Limoges led W-G by finishing 22nd in 22:11, with Aiden Topolavich 2th in 22:37. Also scoring for the varsity was Sterling Parkinson (39th, 24:12), Tjaden Smeltzer (41st, 24:41) and Grant Polito (44th, 24:57). Joel Harney (47th, 25:46) and Sidney Trees (56th, 29:34) also competed for the Hawks.
Clare and Mary Kelly, junior sisters from Van Meter, were 1-2 in the girls race in 20:41 and 21:16.
Libby Grell (17th, 25:27), Kenzie Dresback (20th, 25:43), Chloe Houge (29th, 26:49), Katie Grell (32nd, 27:17) and Sydney Grell (33nd, 27:22) were the five varsity scorers for W-G. Maddy Mann (38th, 28:17) and Elena Bortot (39th, 28:18) ran for the varsity as well, with Kaitlyn Smith (29:02) and Marissa Trees (34:14) also competing.
The two-mile middle school race was run as a coed event, with each finisher scored equally. Earlham had 65 points to win the competition, with Van Meter second at 77 and W-G third at 109 in an 11-team field.
Donovan Best of Earlham was first in 12:54, but W-G’s Eva Fleshner was second in 13:03 while W-G’s Cael Leighton was fifth in 13:34. Alex Younts was 24th in 14:53, Zoey Osmundson was 32nd in 15:24, and Wiley Sharr 46th in 16:17. Also placing but not having their scores tabulated were Grace Sharr (55th, 16:42) and Jaidyn Achenbach (58th, 16:54).
Chloe Creger (16:56), Talia Wright (17:37), Sunshine Casey (19:14) and Noah Faust (27:15) were in the middle school race as well. All Hawk middle school runners are in eighth grade save Casey and Faust, who are in grade seven.
