Hawk thinclads compete at WCAC meet

A medical emergency at the boys basketball practice Wednesday has resulted in a W-G student being Life-flighted to a Des Moines hospital.

EARLHAM — The Woodward-Granger track teams visited Earlham Tuesday for the West Central Activities Conference meet.

The Hawk boys were eighth out of 10 teams with 40 points while the girls squad was seventh of nine with 43 points. Madrid slipped past Panorama, 125-121, to win the boys side, with Panorama easily outdistancing Des Moines Christian, 165-126, for the girls crown.

Kaleb Noel’s clocking of 57.2 seconds won the 400 hurdles, with Michael Connor’s seventh-place shove of 41 feet, 5 inches in the shot put the representing the only other individual event points for the W-G boys.

The medley relay of Chandler Cavanaugh, Tanner Vermaas, Cole Ashman and Johnnie Morgan were second in 3 minutes, 49.78 seconds, with Ashman, Noel, Morgan and Ian Thompson third in the 4×800 in 8:38.23.

Noel, Morgan, Vermaas and Ashman were fourth in the 4×400 (3:37.96), Connor, Drew Jacobson, J.P. Nixon and Mason Burkhart were fifth in the shuttle hurdle (1:10.82), with Noel, Cavanaugh, Vermaas and Ashman sixth in the 4×200 (1:37.78) while Cavanaugh, Connor, Jacobson and Logan Canova placed seventh in the 4×100 (50.29).

Senior Abby Musser had a pair of runner-up placings in the hurdle events, finishing second in both the 100 (16.62) and 400 (1:08.34) races.

Maddie Anderson was sixth in the 400 in 1:07.71 and Katelyn Peters eighth in the 800 in 2:47.26, with Emma Buckman eighth in the discus with a spin of 78’4 while Nicole Johnson cleared 4’2 for eighth place in the high jump.

The foursome of Tori Manning, Anderson, Musser and Peters placed second in the 4×800 (10:38.59), with Josie Baumgartner joining Anderson, Musser and Peters for fourth in the 4×400 (4:29.51), while Manning, Baumgartner, Alyssa Bice and Regan Kaufman finished sixth in the distance medley (4:56.02).

Savannah David, Jenna McCarthy, Breana Blair and Johnson were sixth in the shuttle hurdle (1:26.71) and Manning , Anderson, Baumgartner adn Mary Hanson eighth in the sprint medley (2:14.73) with the Hawks receiving a point for eighth place in the 4×100 when McCarthy, David, Bice and Kendra Huseman finished in 59.94.
