Hawk volleyball slow out of the gate

The Woodward-Granger netters remained hot Tuesday, winning the sixth of their last seven matches.

WOODWARD — The 2019 volleyball season has started with the Woodward-Granger netters holding a 5-8 overall mark entering Tuesday’s home match with AC/GC. The Hawks are 1-1 in WCAC action.

W-G opened with a 3-0 win over WCV in Woodward Aug. 29, then played six matches at the Skip Anderson Classic in Bondurant Aug. 31. The Hawks finished 2-4, defeating Fort Madison, 2-0, and Williamsburg 2-1, with losses coming to host Bondurant-Farrar, North Polk, Pella and Pella Christian, all by 0-2 finals.

Host Des Moines Christian was a 3-0 winner over W-G Sept. 3, with the Hawks 2-3 at the ADM Invite Thursday. W-G topped Norwalk, 2-0, and Atlantic, 2-1, but fell to ADM and Nevada by 1-2 scores and by Gilbert, 0-2.

Individual statistics have only been sporadically reported and have been delayed. No statistics are available from the DMC match or ADM tourney matches.

Through the first seven games Elly Polich leads the team with 52 kills, with Emma Drake adding 20 kills, Natalie Weaver 15 and Brayten Ashman and Kaitlyn Scharlau 12 apiece. Drake has 72 assists and Polich 34 while Scharlau had made six blocks.

Darby Nixon had 78 digs, Kaitlyn Bandstra 48, Polich 31, Drake 26 and Jenae Jones 21.

Bandstra served 65-of-69 with 12 aces and Drake 69-of-73 with 12 aces. Polich was 43-50-10, Nixon 51-63-8, Jones 30-34-5 and Scharlau 27-30-5 behind the line.

After tonight’s match with AC/GC the Hawks will play on just three dates through the end of the month. They visit Interstate-35 Sept. 17, the Ballard Tournament Sept. 21 and they host Earlham Sept. 24.
