Hawk wrestlers place second at conference duals

The Woodward-Granger wrestlers finished second at the conference dual tourney in Panora Saturday.

PANORA — One Hawk went undefeated and five others finished with 4-1 marks to lift Woodward-Granger to second place overall at the WCC Duals Saturday.

Ogden was 5-0 in winning the outright title, with both W-G and Guthrie Center 3-2, but the Hawks won on criteria to take second place. Van Meter was also 3-2 in placing fourth, with 1-4 West Central Valley fourth and 0-5 Panorama fifth in the six-team field.

W-G defeated Panorama, 46-26, in the first round and Van Meter, 43-36, in the second round. Ogden topped W-G, 36-30, in round three, with W-G stopping WCV, 41-30 before suffering a 39-36 loss to Guthrie Center in the final round.

Senior 152-pounder Race Brant was 5-0 for W-G. He received three forfeits and scored pins against Harrison Haglund of Ogden in 4 minutes, 40 seconds while nailing Steven Ward of WCV in 2:43.

Hunter Pierce (106 pounds), Ty Turner (113/120), Josh Saak (138/145), Austin Scharlau (160) and Tanner Vermaas (182/195) all finished 4-1 for W-G.

Pierce scored a 17-0 technical fall against Alex Tuma (VM) and received four forfeits, with Turner receiving a forfeit at 120, defeating Cade Costlow (VM), 7-6, and pinning both Zachary Fees (GC, time n/a) and Taylon ENgleen (OGD) in 3:06 at 113.

Saak beat Jacob Hathman (OGD), 10-6, had a 13-2 major decision over Noah Kirtley (PAN) and received a forfeit at 138 while pinning WCV’s Cole Sackett in 3:04 at 145 for his four wins.

Scharlau stayed at 160 for all five of his matches, one of which was a forfeit. He scored wins by pinfall against Garrett Bales (OGD) in 3:31, against Cole Stetzel (GC, time n/a) and against Colton Golwitzer (VM) in 1:36.

Vermaas picked up a win at 195 with a pin of Panorama’s Dalton Holmes in 1:33, was given a forfeit at 182 and scored tech fall wins at 182 over Isaac Benton (VM), 19-4, and over Riley Algreen (WCV), 15-0.

Tae Calderon received a forfeit and pinned Kendra Felder (PAN) in 39 seconds to finish 2-0 at 113, with Colt Palmer receiving a forfeit at 120 and losing three times at 120 to finish 1-3 overall.

Ryley Saxton was winless in four matches at 126 and one at 132, with Cole Carman pinning Jacob Holwegner (PAN) in 39 ticks, scoring a 4-1 win over Zach Waterbury (OGD) and picking up a forfeit at 132. He lost by fall at 132 once and by fall at 138 once to finish 3-2.

Aaron Sperling was 3-2 in five matches at 170, with a forfeit, a pin against Teddy Daggett (GC, time n/a) and a pin against Noah Hale (VM) in 43 seconds.

Freshman Jacob Kepford was also in action for the Hawks. He was winless in four matches at 220 and picked up a win by forfeit at 285 to finish 1-4.

All Hawk wrestling in 2016 will be on the road. Woodward-Granger returns to action Jan. 5 at WCV, Jan. 7 at a triangular in Eagle Grove and Jan. 9 at the Coon Rapids-Bayard Tournament.
