Hawks drop pair on opening day of W-G Classic

WOODWARD — Host Woodward-Granger found themselves on the short end of scores of 10-0 and of 4-3 during the first day of their annual softball classic.

The Hawks were held to one hit in suffering a 10-0 loss in six innings to Pleasantville, then had a seventh-inning rally come up short in a 4-3 setback to Council Bluffs Lewis Central.

In other Friday games, it was Perry 2, Madrid 1; Winterset 5, CBLC 3; Ogden 7, Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln 2; Winterset 10, Madrid 0 (5)l Ogden 2, Pleasantville 1 and CBAL 2, Perry 1 (9).

Miranda Aunspach had a single and drew a walk for W-G against Pleasantville, with three errors accounting for the only other Hawk base runners in the contest.

Pleasantville was the home team on the scoreboard. They scored three times in the first frame, once each in the third and fifth stanzas and then five more times in the sixth to end the game early.

Riley Jamison was given the loss in the ring. She allowed 10 runs (only three were earned) on nine hits in 5-2/3 frames. Jamison hit one batter, struck out one and issued two walks.

Hannah Gordon, Traci Kunze and Avari Heinz-Pence all had doubles for Pleasantville.

W-G fell into a 4-1 hole when Lewis Central used a close call in their favor to produce four hits in five batters and score three run in the bottom of the fourth. The Hawks countered with a tally in the seventh but could not complete the comeback in absorbing the loss.

Anne Webb reached on an error and scored on an Alison Soelberg base hit in the second for W-G, but Lewis Central responded in the bottom of the inning when Jose Shudock singled and later scored on an error.

The Hawks had stranded two runners in the first and one in both the second and third innings but pushed across a run in the fourth when Webb walked, moved up on a walk and crossed home when Aunspach reached via error.

Kallie Legband singled to start the Titan fourth,with Shudock lining out to Aunspach at shortstop, whose peg back to first base appeared to have doubled off Legband, only to have the call go against the Hawks.

Kaylie Lightfoot singled and Ashton Miller doubled home a run, with a two-run singled from Zohie Damgaard pushing the score to 4-2 as the bottom of the lineup did almost all the damage for the Titans. Seven of the nine Lewis Central hits and all four runs in the win came from spots 5-9 in the lineup.

Kendra Husmann doubled for W-G in the fifth but was left on base, as were Soelberg and Aunspach in the sixth after a pair of two-out singles.

Jamison dodged a Lewis Central threats in the fifth and sixth to keep her team in the game.

Meagan Bandstra was aboard on a two-base error with two outs in the top of the seventh when Webb singled to left. Bandstra scored, but Titans catcher Gabby Martinez came up the line to shorten the throw from the left fielder and fired in time to second base to nail Webb, who was trying to take an extra base on the throw home.

Soelberg had two singles and walked for W-G, with Aunspach and Jamison adding two hits apiece while Husmann had a double a Webb a single.

Jamison went six frames, yiedlng four runs (three earned) on nine hits while walking one in six innings of work.

McKenna Dufek won in the ring with seven innings off the rubber. She allowed three runs (all unearned) on eight hits and two walks while finishing with five strikeouts.

W-G will battle WCC foe Ogden in a non-conference tilt at 10 a.m. and then face cross-county rival Perry at 4 p.m. today.
